Barritt banned for three weeks, Barrington escapes punishment

Official News ·

Brad Barritt has been banned for three weeks for his dangerous tackle on Geoff Parling, although Saracens team-mate Richard Barrington has escaped punishment for his red card in the same incident.

England centre Barritt caught the Exeter Chiefs lock with a high tackle during Saturday's 13-13 Premiership draw, knocking Parling unconscious before Barrington followed up with an inadvertent shoulder to the head.

Parling was carried from the field on a stretcher, with Barrington dismissed for his indiscretion.

However, a Rugby Football Union (RFU) disciplinary panel has decided that because Parling was already knocked out by Barritt, Barrington will receive no further punishment and is free to play again immediately.

"The incident arose out of the specific dynamic of Mr Parling falling unconscious into what would have otherwise been a legitimate contact by Mr Barrington," an RFU statement read.

"In line with the new sanctions a mid-range entry of six weeks was imposed on Mr Barritt reduced to three weeks in light of mitigation including his guilty plea."

Barritt, who posted on Twitter to apologise profusely to Parling, will miss Saracens' European Champions Cup meetings with Scarlets and Toulon, as well as an Anglo-Welsh Cup fixture against the Pro12 outfit, which he would have likely been rested from in any case.
