Furyk named United States Ryder Cup captain

Official News ·

Jim Furyk has been named as the United States captain for the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National.

Furyk was vice-captain when the United States regained the famous trophy with a resounding 17-11 victory over Europe at Hazeltine last year and was on Wednesday confirmed as Davis Love III's successor.

Fred Couples was also a contender for the role, but it is 2003 U.S. Open champion who will lead his country in the prestigious biennial event near Paris against a Europe team which will be captained by Thomas Bjorn.

Furyk, who has played in nine Ryder Cups, revealed that Davis Love III will be a vice-captain in France in a role reversal from last year.

The 46-year-old said: "This is such an honour, I'm overwhelmed. This has been my favourite event in my career. It embodies everything that is special about golf.

"The experiences this event gives me, I get chills thinking about it and to be sitting here as captain is a great honour."

Furyk has been on more Ryder Cup teams than any other United States captain, but has only won the competition twice as a player.

The United States have not won the event overseas since a 15-13 success at The Belfry back in 1993.
